USB 3.1 Gen-1 Controller in Host Mode, Device Mode, and Dual-Role Device Mode

Introduction

USB 3.1 is a significant advancement of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) standard, delivering notable improvements in data transfer speed, power efficiency, and overall system performance. The USB 3.1 Gen 1 controller integrated in the Agilex™ 5 E-Series supports SuperSpeed operation with a maximum data transfer rate of up to 5 gigabits per second (5 Gbps). It maintains backward compatibility with USB 2.0 devices and supports both the traditional Type-A connector and the versatile USB Type-C interface.

Beyond higher throughput, USB 3.1 introduces enhancements in power management and data encoding efficiency, making it well suited for high-bandwidth applications such as 4K video streaming and high-speed external storage. As a result, USB 3.1 serves as a key technology for enabling fast, reliable, and efficient data communication in embedded systems and Hard Processor System (HPS)–based designs.

Overview

The Hard Processor System (HPS) on the Agilex™ 5 E-Series Premium Development Kit incorporates a USB 3.1 Gen 1 controller that supports Host, Device, and Dual-Role Device (DRD) operating modes to address a wide range of high-speed application requirements. The controller is compliant with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.1 protocols, ensuring flexibility and broad device compatibility.

This page provides step-by-step guidance on configuring and enabling Host Mode, Device Mode, and Dual-Role Device (DRD) Mode on the Agilex™ 5 E-Series platform.

Note: Device Mode is also known as Gadget Mode and Peripheral Mode.

For the enablement of the three modes, there are modifications to be made respectively on the Golden Hardware System Design (GHRD) and/or Yocto Build, please refer to the table below to understand the modification required for each mode.

Prerequisites

Development Kit

This tutorial example design is based on the Agilex 5 E-Series Premium Development Kit GSRD. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the GSRD development flow before proceeding with this tutorial. The HPS Enablement Expansion Board (also referred as HPS Daughter Card) is included with the development kit.

  • Altera Agilex 5 FPGA E-Series 065B Premium Development Kit, ordering code DK-A5E065BB32AEA.
    • HPS Enablement Expansion Board. Included with the development kit
    • HPS NAND Board. Enables eMMC storage for HPS. Orderable separately
    • HPS Test Board. Supports SD card boot, and external Arm tracing. Orderable separately
    • Mini USB Cable. Included with the development kit
    • Micro USB Cable. Included with the development kit
    • Ethernet Cable. Included with the development kit
    • Micro SD card and USB card writer. Included with the development kit

Development Environment

This is the recommended setting for the system used for compilation of the boot image.

  • Host PC with
    • Ubuntu 22.04 LTS host machine
    • 64 GB of RAM or more
    • Disk space of 100GB or more
    • Serial terminal (for example GtkTerm or Minicom on Linux and TeraTerm or PuTTY on Windows)
    • Altera® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Version 26.1
    • TFTP server. This used to download the eMMC binaries to board to be flashed by U-Boot
  • Local Ethernet network, with DHCP server
  • Internet connection. For downloading the files.

Test Environment

This is the recommended setting for the system used for testing.

  • Test PC with
    • Can be Windows OS or Linux OS
    • USB Ports
  • USB Type-C thumbdrive larger than 5GB storage
  • USB Type-C cable to connect to the dev-kit and Test PC

1. USB 3.1 in Host Mode

1.1 Build SD Card Binaries

1. To get the SD Card binaries, you may follow the steps in https://altera-fpga.github.io/rel-26.1/embedded-designs/agilex-5/e-series/premium-065b/gsrd/ug-gsrd-agx5e-premium-065b/#build-sd-card-binaries to generate the bootable SD Card image. Or, you may get the prebuilt binaries in Prebuilt Binaries

2. To boot up the dev-kit from SD Card, you may refer to https://altera-fpga.github.io/rel-26.1/embedded-designs/agilex-5/e-series/premium-065b/gsrd/ug-gsrd-agx5e-premium-065b/#hps-enablement-board for the steps to program the SD Card image.

1.2 Verification - Transfer a file to a Removable Storage

1. Boot up the dev-kit with the SD Card and Quartus Programmer, login with “root”.

2. Plug in the dev-kit’s USB Type-C port with a USB Type-C thumbdrive.

3. From the system message, the thumbdrive is attached as /dev/sda1.

4. Mount the thumbdrive as a new mountpoint mp1.

mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/mp1

5. Create a sample file “test.txt” in /tmp, copy the file to the mounted drive. This step shows that the USB3.1 is now working in Host mode.

dd if=/dev/random of=/tmp/test.txt bs=1M count=200
cp /tmp/test.txt /mnt/mp1/

6. Remove the test file from the mounted drive.

ls /mnt/mp1/test.txt
rm /mnt/mp1/test.txt

7. At the end of the test, unmount the mounted drive. Thus, the Host mode is verified.

Download the compiler toolchain, add it to the PATH variable, to be used by the GHRD makefile to build the HPS Debug FSBL:

Note: The patch changes the value of dr_mode in the &usb31 node from "host" to "peripheral" in the device tree file socfpga_agilex5_socdk.dts.

2.2 Verification - Using the Dev-Kit as a Removable Storage

1. Boot up the dev-kit with the SD Card and Quartus Programmer, login with “root”.

2. Run the following commands to set up the dev-kit as a Storage Device.

dd if=/dev/random of=/tmp/test.img bs=1024 count=4096
mkfs.vfat /tmp/test.img

3. Load the kernel driver for gadget storage.

modprobe libcomposite
modprobe usb_f_mass_storage
modprobe g_mass_storage file=/tmp/test.img removable=1

4. Plug in the dev-kit’s USB Type-C port with the USB Cable, connect the other end to the Test PC. Observe that the dev-kit is being seen by Test PC as a storage.

5. On the Test PC, write a file “device_test.txt” in the dev-kit storage. This step shows that the USB3.1 is now working in Device mode.

6. On the dev-kit, create a new mountpoint mp2.

mkdir /mnt/mp2
mount /tmp/test.img /mnt/mp2

7. You should be able to read the file from both the dev-kit and Test PC.

ls /mnt/mp2/device_test.txt

8. At the end of the test, unmount the mounted drive. Thus, the Device mode is verified.

3.2 Verification - Using the Dev-Kit in DRD Mode

1. Dual-Role Device Mode essentially means that the user is able to use both Host Mode and Device Mode with the same image.

2. Boot up the dev-kit with the SD Card and Quartus Programmer, login with “root”.

3. Run the steps in 1.2 Verification - Transfer a file to a Removable Storage to verify that Host Mode is working.

4. Run the steps in 2.2 Verification - Using the Dev-Kit as a Removable Storage to verify that Device Mode is working.

5. You may try Step 3 → Step 4 or Step 4 → Step 3 to see the switching of modes, without the need to reset the dev-kit.
